What’s special about the architecture at Casona de Tao?

Lanzarote’s vernacular architecture is the result of centuries of adapting to an environment with very few resources: little water, little wood, plenty of volcanic stone and plenty of wind. The island’s traditional houses have walls of black or whitewashed stone, interior courtyards that shelter from the wind and gather the light, and roofs of tea beams (Canary pine, highly resistant to damp) that have been in place for decades — sometimes centuries.
Casona de Tao keeps all of that. It isn’t decoration. The walls are volcanic because that’s how they were built. The interior courtyard exists because that’s how it was done on this island. The restoration has respected the materials and proportions of the original building, adding only what’s needed to make it comfortable to sleep here today.
It’s the kind of building César Manrique championed throughout his life: architecture that grows from the land it stands on, not architecture imported from somewhere else.

What’s the best area to stay in Lanzarote if you want to get to know the real island?

If you’re after beaches and nightlife, the south — Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca — is the most practical choice. But if you want to understand Lanzarote, staying in the centre of the island changes the trip completely.
We’re in Tao, in the municipality of Tinajo, and from here everything is a reasonable distance away without being in any tourist hotspot: Timanfaya National Park is 15 minutes away, Jameos del Agua 25, Teguise market 10, the La Geria wineries 15, and the airport 20. You don’t have to choose between north and south, because you’re right in the centre.
What you won’t find here is crowds, beach bars and queues. For some, that’s exactly what they’re looking for; for others, it isn’t. If you’re reading this, you’re probably one of the former.

From Tao, the best beaches in the north (Famara, La Garita) are 20 minutes away. The southern beaches (Papagayo, Playa Blanca) are about 40 minutes away. That’s not far. But the difference in setting between sleeping in a resort in Puerto del Carmen and sleeping in a volcanic country house in Tao is huge: one gives you a pool and entertainment; the other gives you Lanzarote.
For a trip of 4 nights or more, where you want to do something different every day, the centre is strategically the best location on the island.

What can you do from Casona de Tao? Is it a good base for exploring the island?

It’s probably the best base on the island for anyone who wants to see everything without being tied to one spot.
Within a 25-minute radius of Tao you’ll find: Timanfaya National Park (the most spectacular active lava routes in Europe), Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes (César Manrique’s architecture built into volcanic tunnels), the César Manrique Foundation in Taro de Tahíche, Mirador del Río (with views over La Graciosa), the La Geria wineries (a volcanic vineyard unique in the world), Teguise market (the largest in the Canaries, Sundays only), northern beaches like Famara (surfing and cliffs), and the capital Arrecife for an afternoon in town.
What you won’t find within 25 minutes: southern beaches like Papagayo or Playa Blanca, which are about 40-45 minutes away. For anyone who wants to combine north and south in the same trip, renting a car — always recommended in Lanzarote — solves everything.
